Indian theater has a rich history spanning thousands of years, encompassing various forms such as classical Sanskrit drama, regional folk theater, and modern experimental theater. French observers would have encountered these diverse forms of Indian theater and likely recorded their observations in travelogues, scholarly writings, and translations. Sylvain Lévi published in 1890 a two-volumes seminal study of this genre.
